The exhibition shows the relationship between visual art and music through the structural linking of both forms of expression. Starting with approaches such as the synesthesia of the Russian composer, Alexander Skrjabin, who exposed himself to artistic expression with his colour piano, or the contrapuntal theory of Hans Richter, who as a visual artist translated models of musical form into the optical and filmic, a new independent artistic practice located in the field of tension between musical and visual composition is made visual, audible and tangible. The works shown connect the artistic forms in a decidedly non-hierarchical but inter-referential, audio-visual manner, reflecting their formal bases and the transgression of these. The exhibition is not concerned with ancillary illustration or scoring, but with a homogenous interweaving of both means of expression and the opening of intersensory fields of perception. Works from the mediums of film, video, installation, painting, music and sound allow different perspectives on the subject of the exhibition and unfold connections that until now have been unfamiliar. Staged as a route through the exhibition rooms, a dialogue is created by the spatial relationships between the works. Accompanying the exhibition in a concert at the Opernstudio Biel, the interstices between musical and spatio-visual composition will be occupied by premieres and first performances of international artists and musicians. The exhibition continues the EXTENDED COMPOSITIONS project which first took place in Berlin in 2015.
